UK TAX EXPLAINED. NO FLUFF. NO JARGON.
Tax Returns Explained.
What is a tax return?
A tax return is essentially a form which must be submitted to HMRC (the UK government’s tax department). In this form you must declare your income, expenditure and personal circumstances. You must then submit a series of taxes based on your income threshold and other considerations.
∼
Do I need to submit a tax return?
Filing a tax return is a legal requirement in the UK for anyone that:
• is self-employed
• has a business partnership
• has rental income
• has income over £100k
• is a company director
• has investment income
• has any other form of untaxed income
If you meet ANY of these requirements, you must submit a return!

Why hire an accountant?
One of the biggest questions people ask is: can I file my return myself? The short answer is…yes! However, like with everything in life, you get what you pay for! Accountants are experts and filing a tax return really is an art! Paying for an expert to file your return will guarantee you get it right (no hefty fines for inaccurate submissions!) On top of that, Sprout could save you thousands by knowing exactly what to claim for and what to submit. Don’t be paying more tax than you need to!
If you are filing your tax return yourself, it is highly recommended to get it reviewed and checked by us first!
∼
When do I need to submit my form?
The tax year runs from the 6th April to the 5th April (the following year). So this means, as soon as the 5th April has passed, you can file your tax return for that previous year!
However, most people are more familiar with the tax return deadline! The deadline is the 31st Jan, hence why everyone rushes to submit their return in January! However, there is no need to leave it until the last minute and at Sprout we highly recommend early submission to allow you to tax plan and pay via monthly direct debit with us!
